Free customs data โ€” mine your precise target clients!

  • Combine Google search with a few specific search tricks to pull target customers in bulk from free customs-data sites.
  • This guide walks through three representative customs-data sites as examples. Other similar sites generally work the same way.
  • ๐Ÿ‘‰ Got tips? If you know another good data source or have a new finding, feel free to reach us on WeChat: tony-apan.

1. Let's start with importgeniusโ€‹

๐Ÿ’ก Why importgenius?
  • importgenius is a widely used customs-data site. To pull traffic, they expose a lot of customs data publicly on the web.
  • We can leverage that โ€” through Google + a few search tricks โ€” to bulk-find target customer info on importgenius.
site:importgenius.com lighting

  • โš ๏ธ Read carefully: In the search results, the company name is usually before the vertical bar "|". If you need to batch-process the names, use a spreadsheet's "Text to Columns" to extract them quickly.

1. Use a product name to find suppliers (your peers)โ€‹

๐Ÿค” New to foreign trade and not yet familiar with products or customers โ€” how do I find peers to learn from?
  • No worries โ€” customs data can help.
  • Take an example result: a company called S.K Lighting Trade Co., Limited. Click its link:
https://www.importgenius.com/india/suppliers/s-k-lighting-trade-co-limited
  • From this URL, we can see india and suppliers.
  • This is likely an Indian supplier. If you're looking for buyers (importers), this isn't your target.
  • Logic for finding peer suppliers: Specifically search pages with suppliers in the URL. Your formula becomes:
site:importgenius.com inurl:suppliers {product name}
  • Using lighting again:
site:importgenius.com inurl:suppliers lighting

Google search results for lighting suppliers on importgenius โ€” using inurl to filter for supplier pages only

  • โš ๏ธ Reminder: Company names are usually before the "|".

2. Use a product name to find importer customersโ€‹

๐Ÿ’ก What products might your clients import?
  • Follow that thread, and you'll uncover more potential targets.
  • Another example: a company called Mw Lighting Inc, whose URL contains importers:
https://www.importgenius.com/importers/mw-lighting-inc
  • We can refine our formula to target importers:
site:importgenius.com/importers {product name}
  • Using lighting:
site:importgenius.com/importers lighting
  • Results from this formula are essentially all importer companies.

  • โš ๏ธ As before: Company names are before the "|".

โ‘  Want to filter by country?โ€‹

  • Q: What if I only want importers from a specific country, e.g., the US?
    • A: Look for a signature on the client page. Take Mw Lighting Inc:
https://www.importgenius.com/importers/mw-lighting-inc
  • Open this page and scan for an obvious tell: US Customs records โ€” it's a US-based importer.

site:importgenius.com/importers AND "US Customs records" {product name}
  • Using lighting:
site:importgenius.com/importers AND "US Customs records" lighting
  • The results are now mostly US-based lighting-related importers.

3. Use a peer company name to find their importersโ€‹

๐Ÿ’ก Found an importer โ€” how do you dig up their supplier (your peer), and through that peer, more importers?
  • This thread can expand your target pool significantly.
  • Take Mw Lighting Inc again โ€” go to its page to find its suppliers:
https://www.importgenius.com/importers/mw-lighting-inc
  • On this page, one of its suppliers is: HANGZHOU LIJIACHENG ELECTRIC CO.

Caption: The page shows one of Mw Lighting Inc's suppliers.

  • HANGZHOU LIJIACHENG ELECTRIC CO can be treated as your peer. Use the following formula to find that peer's overseas customers (importers buying from them):
site:importgenius.com/importers "{peer company name}"
  • Plug in the peer name:
site:importgenius.com/importers "HANGZHOU LIJIACHENG ELECTRIC CO"

Caption: Searching by peer name surfaces importers that have transacted with that peer.

  • โš ๏ธ Reminder: Target company names are typically before the "|".

4. Use HS code to find importersโ€‹

๐Ÿ’ก If you already know the product's HS code, how do you use it to find target clients?
  • Formula for searching importers by HS code:
    • Example: HS code 8479909090, searching for US importers:
site:importgenius.com/importers AND "US Customs records" AND "8479909090"

5. Got a company name โ€” how to quickly look it up?โ€‹

๐Ÿค” You now have target company names from the methods above โ€” how do you quickly find their websites and detailed info?

โ‘  Search the website directly on Googleโ€‹

  • Take Mw Lighting Inc โ€” paste the name into Google. Usually the top result is the company's official site.

โ‘ก Use Laifaxin to look up client detailsโ€‹

  • Use ๐Ÿ‘‰ Laifaxin's ๐Ÿ“š Global Search Engine to look up client info:
    • 1๏ธโƒฃ Type the client name Mw Lighting Inc into the search box.
    • 2๏ธโƒฃ Click a result to preview the company's details โ€” emails, social accounts, etc. all visible.

โ‘ข How to bulk-search clientsโ€‹

๐Ÿ’ก If you have 100 client company names in hand, how do you bulk-search and extract their info?
  • ๐Ÿ‘‰ Laifaxin has a dedicated tool for that!

2. Try a different site: importyetiโ€‹

  • Same logic, different site. The formula for importyeti:
site:importyeti.com/company {product name}
  • Replace with lighting:
site:importyeti.com/company lighting

3. And now try volzaโ€‹

  • The formula is similar:
site:volza.com/company-profile {product name}
  • With lighting:
site:volza.com/company-profile lighting

Google search results for lighting on volza using site.com/company-profile path โ€” broad search results that may include unwanted exporters

  • โš ๏ธ You may notice: results often include many exporters โ€” especially Chinese exporters โ€” which aren't what we want.

1. How to search importers onlyโ€‹

  • Q: Can I filter out exporters and only get importers?
    • A: Yes โ€” look for the signature.
    • Example: Find a company called Lighting Inc.
  • Spot the signature: On its page, you see: a importer based in United States. So it's a US importer. importer based is a great signature term.

Caption: Page description tells us this is a US importer.

  • Refined formula: Add the importer signature:
site:volza.com/company-profile "importer based" {product name}
  • With lighting:
site:volza.com/company-profile "importer based" lighting

2. Limit by regionโ€‹

  • Q: What if I only want US importers?
    • A: Combine the importer signature and the country signature, e.g., "importer based in United States".
    • Refined formula:
site:volza.com/company-profile "importer based in United States" {product name}
  • With lighting:

4. Extensions & resourcesโ€‹

1. FAQโ€‹

  • โ“ Q: Are these customs-data sites completely free?

    • A: They may offer a few free lookups or basic info, but deeper data and advanced features usually require payment. The approach here exploits the parts they publicly expose to Google to attract traffic โ€” we "borrow" what Google has already indexed.
  • โ“ Q: Is the client info found this way accurate?

    • A: Customs data is based on real trade records, so company names and some transaction info are relatively accurate. But contact details and company size may be stale or incomplete. Once you have a lead, enrich it with ๐Ÿ‘‰ Laifaxin's ๐Ÿ“š Domain Search or ๐Ÿ“š Company Name Search.
  • โ“ Q: Why do some search results have garbage characters after the company name?

    • A: Google may include other parts of the page title in the snippet. As mentioned, the part before "|" (or another obvious separator) is usually the accurate company name. Use a spreadsheet's "Text to Columns" to extract it.

2. Learning tipsโ€‹

  • โœ… Try different keyword combos: Beyond the product name, try materials, use cases, industry names, etc., combined with site: and inurl: โ€” you may find surprises.
  • โœ… Watch for other clues on the result page: On a customs-data company page, look beyond the name and trade info โ€” related companies (other suppliers/customers), product descriptions, brands, etc., are all worth digging.
  • โœ… Combine with maps: Once you have an importer in a country/region, drop the company name or address into Google Maps to see nearby peers and understand the local industry cluster.
  • โœ… Patience matters most: Free-channel prospecting is like treasure-hunting โ€” sift carefully. But once you have the method, you save real money.
