Apple iCloud Mail (@icloud.com) · Enable 2FA + Generate App-Specific Password

Apple iCloud Mail (@icloud.com / @me.com / @mac.com — 3 suffixes). Connecting to Laifaxin takes 2 steps:

StepWhatRequired
1 Enable Apple ID two-factor authenticationWithout it, the App-Specific Password entry isn't shown at allYes
2 Generate a 16-char App-Specific PasswordFormat: xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx (with 3 hyphens)Yes

When binding, paste the App-Specific Password into the password field (not your Apple ID main password) — otherwise it fails 100% of the time.

iCloud quirk: 2FA, once enabled, can't be turned off

Apple's hard security policy — 2FA cannot be reversed (only revocable within the first 14 days).

This means:

  • Upside: highest account security (anti-phishing / anti-theft)
  • Cost: future Apple ID sign-ins must use 2FA
  • Recommendation: think before enabling — but for foreign trade, strongly recommended

1. Server Settings

All 3 suffixes share the same servers (regardless of @icloud.com / @me.com / @mac.com):

TypeServerSSL Port
IMAP (incoming)imap.mail.me.com993
SMTP (outgoing)smtp.mail.me.com587 (STARTTLS)

Encryption: SSL / STARTTLS

Server is mail.me.com, NOT icloud.com

Apple kept the legacy MobileMe (2008-2011) domain me.com for mail. Writing imap.icloud.com fails 100% of the time.

iCloud does not support POP3 — IMAP only for multi-device sync.

2. Generate the App-Specific Password

2.1 Enable two-factor authentication (prerequisite)

If your Apple ID has never had 2FA enabled, go to any Apple device that's already signed in:

DevicePath
iPhone / iPadSettings → [your name] → Sign-In & Security → Two-Factor Authentication → Turn On
MacSystem Settings → [your Apple ID] → Sign-In & Security → Two-Factor Authentication → Turn On
Webappleid.apple.com → Sign In → "Sign-In and Security" → Two-Factor Authentication

Official guide: Apple Two-Factor Authentication

2.2 Go to Apple ID → App-Specific Passwords

Open appleid.apple.com → sign in with your Apple ID → complete 2FA → left Sign-In and Security → click App-Specific Passwords → top-right + Generate App-Specific Password:

Apple ID web - Sign-In and Security page: left menu "Sign-In and Security" highlighted, main area shows the "App-Specific Passwords" section, top-right "Generate App-Specific Password" blue button, with a list of existing passwords below (e.g., Foxmail / Mac Mail)

3 key reminders:

ReminderDetail
One client, one passwordOne for Laifaxin, one for Mac Mail, one for iPhone Mail
Use a recognizable labelRecommended: Laifaxin-202605 (with a date for easier cleanup)
Copy immediatelyPassword is shown only once — gone after closing

Enter the label → click Create:

Apple ID web - naming dialog: title "App-Specific Password", text input filled with "Laifaxin-202605", hint "Use a unique label for each app to make auditing easier", with Cancel/Create blue buttons

2.3 Copy the 16-char password (with hyphens)

The system generates a password in xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx format → click Copy immediately:

Apple ID web - password generated dialog: title "App-Specific Password", main area shows the 16-char password (e.g., abcd-efgh-ijkl-mnop) with a Copy button, red hint "Shown only once — copy and save now", with a gray Done button

Do these 2 things right after copying
  1. Paste into the Laifaxin binding form (safest)
  2. Or save to 1Password / Bitwarden first

Do NOT screenshot: Apple device screenshots sync to iCloud Photos and may leak.

Must copy WITH the hyphens

Format is xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx (4 groups x 4 chars + 3 hyphens = 19 chars total).

Missing the hyphens = binding fails.

3. Bind in Laifaxin

Go to Laifaxin Email Accounts and add your iCloud email:

FieldWhat to fill
Email addressFull email, e.g., yourname@icloud.com
PasswordPaste the App-Specific Password (with 3 hyphens!)
IMAP serverimap.mail.me.com · port 993 · SSL
SMTP serversmtp.mail.me.com · port 587 · STARTTLS

Laifaxin binding iCloud Mail: enter yourname@icloud.com + App-Specific Password (with hyphens), IMAP 993 + SMTP 587; status shows "Active"

After binding, turn on email sync + notifications (see Check New Emails).

FAQ

Q1 · Can I turn off 2FA once enabled?

Basically no:

AspectDetail
14-day rollbackWithin 14 days of enabling, you can find a rollback option on the Apple ID web "Sign-In and Security"
Locked after 14 daysPermanently can't disable (Apple's hard policy)
Design purposeAnti-phishing/theft / protects iCloud Keychain / Apple Pay etc.

→ Enabling 2FA is irreversible — think before enabling.

Q2 · Can I recover a forgotten App-Specific Password?

No — revoke and regenerate:

StepAction
1Sign in to appleid.apple.com → Sign-In and Security → App-Specific Passwords
2Find the entry → click Revoke (old password immediately invalidated)
3Click + Generate → use the same label
4In Laifaxin Email Accounts, update the password and save

Q3 · Are setup flows identical across @icloud.com / @me.com / @mac.com?

Yes, identical — they all use the same Apple ID and same servers:

SuffixOriginCurrent state
@icloud.com2011 iCloud launchCurrent mainstream, default for new users
@me.com2008 MobileMe (replaced .Mac)Legacy users still receive/send
@mac.com2000 .Mac serviceOldest Apple mailbox, only legacy users have it

Q4 · How many emails can iCloud Mail send per day?

iCloud doesn't publish a hard limit, but its anti-spam system is strict:

PhaseDaily volumeNotes
Week 1 (new bind)Start at 505–10 minute intervals
Weeks 2–4100–200Watch for anomalies
StableMax 300Don't hit the cap

Never "mass blast" at any stage! Mass blasting = 100% triggers anti-spam.

Truly need bulk sending? Use premium channels:

  • Doesn't touch your iCloud mailbox, no ban risk
  • ¥0.007 per email, system auto-throttles

Q5 · Is iCloud Mail good for foreign trade?

ScenarioFitNotes
1-on-1 client follow-upRecommended@icloud.com is highly trusted overseas (especially among European/US Apple users)
Inquiry repliesRecommendedHigh overseas deliverability
Bulk cold outreachNot suitableStrict anti-spam, low send caps
Multi-touch auto follow-upNot suitableUse smart sequence + premium channels
iCloud+ custom domainStrongly recommendedPaid users can bind @yourbrand.com to send via iCloud

Verdict: iCloud is strongly recommended for small-volume precise communication; for bulk marketing use a custom-domain enterprise mailbox + premium channels.

Q6 · What if accessing appleid.apple.com from China is slow?

Access from China is usually OK, no VPN needed. If slow:

  • Try a different browser (Edge / Safari / Chrome)
  • Off-peak: late night / early morning
  • Generate the app password on your iPhone / Mac directly (no web needed):
    • iPhone: Settings → Apple ID → Sign-In & Security → App-Specific Passwords
    • Mac: System Settings → Apple ID → Sign-In & Security → App-Specific Passwords

Generating on-device is the most stable.

Q7 · How many App-Specific Passwords can one Apple ID generate?

Maximum 25. "One client, one password" is recommended:

If you hit the cap: delete unused entries to free up slots.
