AOL Mail (@aol.com) ยท No 2FA Required to Generate App Password

AOL Mail (@aol.com) is an American veteran email service, now under Yahoo Inc. Connecting to Laifaxin takes just 1 step:

StepWhatRequired
1 Generate a 16-char App PasswordBackend is in English โ€” follow Options โ†’ Account Info โ†’ Account Security โ†’ Generate app passwordYes

When binding, paste the App Password into the password field (not your AOL login password) โ€” otherwise it fails 100% of the time.

AOL quirk: App Password without 2FA

Unlike Apple iCloud / Google Gmail which require 2FA for app passwords, AOL allows generation without enabling 2FA.

This means:

  • Upside: fastest setup (no 2FA fuss first)
  • Risk: slightly lower account security (no 2FA against phishing)
  • Strong recommendation: enable 2FA manually anyway โ€” Account Security page has a "Two-step verification" toggle

1. Server Settingsโ€‹

TypeServerSSL Port
IMAP (incoming)imap.aol.com993
SMTP (outgoing)smtp.aol.com465 (SSL) or 587 (STARTTLS)
POP3 (backup)pop.aol.com995

Encryption: SSL / TLS

IMAP vs POP3 โ€” which to pick
  • IMAP: multi-device sync, foreign-trade first choice
  • POP3: cloud copy deleted after download, for legacy single-device users

2. Generate the App Passwordโ€‹

2.1 Sign in to AOL Mail โ†’ Options โ†’ Account Infoโ€‹

Open mail.aol.com โ†’ sign in with your AOL email + main password โ†’ in the inbox, top-right Options โ†’ dropdown โ†’ Account Info:

AOL Mail web - inbox top-right Options dropdown: top-right "Options" button expanded, dropdown list shows Account Info / Settings / Help / Sign Out, "Account Info" is the target, with the AOL blue header and email list in the background

2.2 Account Security โ†’ Generate app passwordโ€‹

After the page loads, left menu โ†’ Account Security โ†’ find the Generate app password button โ†’ click:

AOL Account Management - Account Security page: left menu "Account Security" highlighted, main area shows Password / 2-Step Verification / App Passwords sections, "Generate app password" blue button at the bottom, with hint "Use for Outlook, Thunderbird, iPhone Mail and other third-party clients"

2.3 Get started introโ€‹

System may show an intro โ†’ click Get started:

AOL App Password - Get started intro dialog: title "Generate an app password", main area lists "What's an app password?" / "Why use one?", with an illustration showing isolation between main password and app password, "Get started" blue button at the bottom

2.4 Name it โ†’ generate โ†’ copyโ€‹

3 key reminders:

ReminderDetail
One client, one passwordOne for Laifaxin, one for Outlook, one for iPhone Mail
Use a recognizable labelRecommended: Laifaxin-202605 (with a date for easier cleanup)
Copy immediatelyThe 16-char password is shown only once โ€” gone after closing

Enter the label โ†’ click Generate password:

AOL App Password - naming dialog: title "Name your app password", text input filled with "Laifaxin-202605", hint "Use a descriptive name to remember where this password is used", with "Generate password" blue button

The system generates a 16-char password โ†’ click Copy immediately:

AOL App Password - generated successfully dialog: title "Your app password is ready", main area shows the 16-char password (e.g., abcd1234efgh5678) in a code block with a Copy button, red hint "Make sure to copy this password now. You won't see it again."

Do these 2 things right after copying
  1. Paste into the Laifaxin binding form (safest, used in the next step)
  2. Or save to 1Password / Bitwarden first

Do NOT screenshot.

3. Bind in Laifaxinโ€‹

Go to Laifaxin Email Accounts and add your AOL email:

FieldWhat to fill
Email addressFull email, e.g., yourname@aol.com
PasswordPaste the App Password (NOT the login password!)
IMAP serverimap.aol.com ยท port 993 ยท SSL
SMTP serversmtp.aol.com ยท port 465 ยท SSL (or 587 STARTTLS)

Laifaxin binding AOL Mail: enter yourname@aol.com + App Password, IMAP 993 + SMTP 465 SSL; status shows "Active"

After binding, turn on email sync + notifications (see Check New Emails).

FAQโ€‹

Q1 ยท Why doesn't AOL require 2FA for App Password?โ€‹

Different companies, different security policies:

AspectAOLApple iCloud / Google Gmail
Mandatory 2FANoYes
App Password prerequisiteNone2FA must be enabled
Steps to generate45โ€“6 (incl. 2FA setup)

โ†’ AOL follows Yahoo's lineage โ€” high convenience, responsibility on the user. Strongly recommend enabling 2FA manually.

Q2 ยท Is AOL Mail still maintained? Will it shut down?โ€‹

Still maintained, but development is slow:

YearEvent
1993AOL (America Online) mail launches, one of the earliest US email services
2015Verizon acquires AOL
2017Verizon merges Yahoo + AOL into Oath (later Verizon Media)
2021Apollo Global Management acquires Yahoo + AOL, restructured as Yahoo Inc.
NowAOL Mail shares backend with Yahoo Mail, but keeps the independent brand

โ†’ Short-term no shutdown, but enterprise users and foreign-trade newcomers prefer Gmail / Outlook.

Q3 ยท Can I recover a forgotten App Password?โ€‹

No โ€” revoke and regenerate:

StepAction
1Sign in to mail.aol.com โ†’ Options โ†’ Account Info โ†’ Account Security
2Find the entry in the App Password list โ†’ click Remove
3Click Generate app password to regenerate
4In Laifaxin Email Accounts, update the password and save

Q4 ยท How many emails can AOL Mail send per day?โ€‹

AOL doesn't publish a hard limit, but its anti-spam is strict (inherited from Yahoo):

PhaseDaily volumeNotes
Week 1 (new bind)Start at 505โ€“10 minute intervals
Weeks 2โ€“4100โ€“200Watch for anomalies
StableMax 300Don't hit the cap
