Zoho Mail · Complete Setup Guide
Zoho Mail is an overseas email service that focuses on privacy and an ad-free experience. Binding it to Laifaxin requires 2 steps:
| Step | Which site | What | Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Enable IMAP Access | Zoho Mail (mail.zoho.com) | Check IMAP Access in settings | Yes |
| 2. Generate the app-specific password | Zoho Account Center (accounts.zoho.com) | Generate a 16-digit app password | Yes |
→ When binding, fill the password field with the app-specific password (not your Zoho account main password).
Zoho Mail Free plan does not support IMAP/SMTP external access — binding a third-party client requires a paid plan.
If you see "This account is not eligible to use this feature" when generating an app password, it's a Free plan limitation (see FAQ Q2).
Don't look in the wrong place — Zoho places these 2 steps on 2 sites:
- Enable IMAP Access → in Zoho Mail (mail.zoho.com) settings
- Generate app password → in Zoho Account Center (accounts.zoho.com) security settings
1. Server Parameters
| Protocol | Use | Server | SSL Port |
|---|---|---|---|
| IMAP | Receive | imap.zoho.com | 993 |
| SMTP | Send | smtp.zoho.com | 465 |
Encryption: SSL / TLS
2. Enable IMAP Access (in Zoho Mail)
Steps:
- Log in to Zoho Mail web
- Click Settings in the top-right (gear icon) → Mail Accounts
- Find the mailbox account to configure → check IMAP Access → click Save

3. Generate the App-Specific Password (in Zoho Account Center)
This step is on another site — Zoho Account Center, not Zoho Mail.
Steps:
- Log in to Zoho Account Center → go to Security → App passwords
- Click Generate New Password

- Enter an identifier name (we suggest
Laifaxin) → click Generate

- The system generates a 16-digit app password → copy it immediately
Once closed, it cannot be viewed again — only deleted and regenerated. Paste it into Laifaxin right away, or save to a password manager first.

4. Bind in Laifaxin
Go to Laifaxin email account and add the Zoho enterprise mailbox:
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Email address | Full enterprise email, e.g. yourname@yourcompany.com |
| Password | Paste the 16-digit app-specific password (NOT the main password!) |
| IMAP server | imap.zoho.com · Port 993 · SSL |
| SMTP server | smtp.zoho.com · Port 465 · SSL |

Once verified, the mailbox status shows Normal — binding successful.
After binding, turn on mail sync + notifications (see Check New Emails).
Pitfall Summary
| Pitfall | Consequence | How to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Trying to bind a third-party client on the Free plan | "This account is not eligible to use this feature" | Zoho Free plan doesn't support IMAP/SMTP — upgrade to a paid plan |
| Looking for app password in Zoho Mail | Can't find the entry | App password lives in Zoho Account Center (accounts.zoho.com), not Zoho Mail |
| Generated password without checking IMAP Access | Binding still fails | First check IMAP Access in Zoho Mail and Save |
| Binding with the Zoho main password | Authentication failed | Must use the app-specific password |
| Closed popup without copying | Password lost (shown only once) | Go to Account Center, delete the old one, regenerate |
| Using enterprise mailbox for bulk sending | Company domain goes to spam, hurts the whole org | Use a quality channel for bulk; reserve the enterprise mailbox for 1-on-1 |
FAQ
Q1 · Why use an "app-specific password" instead of the main password?
This is a security enhancement: app passwords give each client a unique login credential. Even if a client's password leaks, the main account stays safe, and you can revoke authorization for one app individually without affecting the others.
Q2 · What if generating the app password shows "This account is not eligible to use this feature"?
This is a Zoho Mail Free plan limitation — the Free plan does not support IMAP/SMTP external access.

→ Solution: upgrade to a paid plan. Zoho Mail's paid plans open up IMAP/SMTP, which is required for binding third-party clients (Laifaxin, Foxmail, etc.).
Q3 · Why are IMAP Access and the app password configured in different places?
Zoho splits the account system into two layers:
| Setting | Where | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| IMAP Access | Zoho Mail (mail.zoho.com) | Whether this mailbox allows IMAP access |
| App passwords | Zoho Account Center (accounts.zoho.com) | Security credentials for the entire Zoho account |
→ Both must be set: first enable IMAP Access in Zoho Mail, then generate the app password in Account Center.
Q4 · What if I forget / lose the app password?
Cannot be recovered, only delete and create a new one:
- Log in to accounts.zoho.com → Security → App passwords
- Delete the old app password entry
- Click Generate New Password to regenerate → re-bind in Laifaxin
Q5 · Is Zoho Mail suitable for foreign trade? How many emails per day?
Worth considering among overseas mailboxes. Zoho is an internationally-oriented email service, with decent overseas delivery, privacy focus, and no ads.
But bulk sending should still go through a quality channel — sending bulk directly from the enterprise mailbox damages the company domain reputation.
Warm-up strategy (don't run outreach at the cap):
| Stage | Daily send | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 (newly bound) | Start at 50 | 5–10 min interval |
| Weeks 2–4 | 100–200 | Watch bounce rate (keep ≤ 3%) |
| Stable phase | Up to 300 | Bulk sends via quality channel |
Learning Suggestions
| Stage | Suggestion |
|---|---|
| Confirm your plan first | Free plan can't use IMAP/SMTP — binding a third-party client requires a paid plan |
| Enable IMAP Access | In Zoho Mail Settings → Mail Accounts, check IMAP Access |
| Generate the app password | In Zoho Account Center (accounts.zoho.com) |
| One client, one password + label it | Each client gets its own app password with a clear name (e.g. Laifaxin / iPhone Mail) |
| Periodic cleanup | Periodically delete unused app passwords in Account Center |
| Use a quality channel for bulk | For mass sends, don't send directly from the enterprise mailbox — use the quality channel |
