What are IMAP and SMTP?

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) and SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) are two globally adopted email standards:

Why do mainstream mailboxes require an "app-specific password"?

Security. Handing your login password directly to a third-party app carries these risks:
