Yandex Mail (@yandex.com) ยท Enable Protocols + Generate App Password

Yandex Mail is the free email service from the Russian portal Yandex (Russia's Google-equivalent). Connecting to Laifaxin takes 2 steps:

StepWhatRequired
1 Enable IMAP/POP3 in webmailYandex disables protocols by default โ€” without enabling, you can't connect at allYes
2 Generate a 16-char app passwordAt Yandex ID โ†’ Security โ†’ App passwordsYes

When binding, paste the app password into the password field (not your Yandex main login password) โ€” otherwise it fails 100% of the time.

Yandex quirk: enable protocols BEFORE generating app password

Unlike QQ / 163 where enabling service and generating password are combined, Yandex puts these on two separate pages:

  • Protocol toggles: Mail Settings โ†’ Email clients
  • App password: Yandex ID โ†’ Security โ†’ App passwords

โ†’ Common mistake: generating the app password without enabling protocols = binding fails.

1. Server Settingsโ€‹

All Yandex suffixes share the same servers:

TypeServerSSL Port
IMAP (incoming)imap.yandex.com993
SMTP (outgoing)smtp.yandex.com465 (SSL) or 587 (STARTTLS)
POP3 (backup)pop.yandex.com995

Encryption: SSL / TLS

Always use .com, not .ru

Even if your email is @yandex.ru / @yandex.kz, the servers always use imap.yandex.com.

Writing imap.yandex.ru fails 100% of the time.

2. Enable IMAP/POP3 Protocols (prerequisite)โ€‹

2.1 Go to All settingsโ€‹

Sign in to mail.yandex.com โ†’ top-right gear icon โ†’ dropdown โ†’ All settings:

Yandex Mail web - inbox top-right settings entry: top-right gear icon clicked to expand dropdown, list shows All settings / Display settings / Themes / Help, "All settings" is the target, with Yandex red/yellow header and email list in background

2.2 Email clients โ†’ check IMAP/POP3 โ†’ saveโ€‹

After the page loads, left menu โ†’ Email clients โ†’ check From the imap.yandex.com server via IMAP โ†’ recommend also check POP3 โ†’ click Save changes:

Yandex Mail - Email clients protocol enable page: left menu "Email clients" highlighted, main area shows protocol options including IMAP and POP3 checkboxes (both checked), encryption defaults to SSL, "Save changes" yellow button at the bottom

No protocols enabled = app password useless

Even if you generate an app password, without protocols enabled Laifaxin still can't connect. Email clients must be checked and saved before moving on.

3. Generate the App Passwordโ€‹

3.1 Go to Account managementโ€‹

Back in the inbox โ†’ top-right avatar โ†’ dropdown โ†’ Account management:

Yandex Mail - top-right avatar dropdown: user avatar clicked to expand, dropdown shows Account management / Add account / Logout, "Account management" is the target

3.2 Security โ†’ App passwordsโ€‹

After redirecting to Yandex ID โ†’ top nav Security โ†’ scroll to find App passwords:

Yandex ID - Security page: top nav "Security" tab highlighted, main area split into modules: login password / 2FA / security questions / App passwords, "App passwords" module highlighted with hint "Use for Outlook/Thunderbird/iPhone Mail and other third-party clients"

3.3 Yandex Mail โ†’ click "+"โ€‹

In the App passwords creation area, find the Yandex Mail row โ†’ click the + next to it:

Yandex ID - App passwords creation area: list shows Yandex Mail / Calendar / Disk and other service entries, "Yandex Mail" row has a "+" blue plus button on the right, with hint "Create separate app passwords for each device"

3.4 Name it โ†’ generate โ†’ copyโ€‹

3 key reminders:

ReminderDetail
One client, one passwordOne for Laifaxin, one for Outlook, one for iPhone Mail
Use a recognizable labelRecommended: Laifaxin-202605 (with a date for easier cleanup)
Copy immediatelyThe 16-char password is shown only once โ€” gone after closing

Enter the label โ†’ click Create:

Yandex ID - app password naming dialog: title "Application name", text input filled with "Laifaxin-202605", hint "Use descriptive name to identify each device", with Cancel/Create blue buttons

The system generates a 16-char password โ†’ click Copy immediately:

Yandex ID - app password generated successfully dialog: title "Your password", main area shows the 16-char password (e.g., abcd1234efgh5678) in a code block with a Copy button, red hint "This password is shown only once. Make sure to copy it now."

Do these 2 things right after copying
  1. Paste into the Laifaxin binding form (safest, used in the next step)
  2. Or save to 1Password / Bitwarden first

Do NOT screenshot.

4. Bind in Laifaxinโ€‹

Go to Laifaxin Email Accounts and add your Yandex email:

FieldWhat to fill
Email addressFull email, e.g., yourname@yandex.com or @yandex.ru
PasswordPaste the 16-char app password (NOT the login password!)
IMAP serverimap.yandex.com ยท port 993 ยท SSL
SMTP serversmtp.yandex.com ยท port 465 ยท SSL (or 587 STARTTLS)

Laifaxin binding Yandex Mail: enter yourname@yandex.com + app password, IMAP 993 + SMTP 465 SSL; status shows "Active"

After binding, turn on email sync + notifications (see Check New Emails).

FAQโ€‹

Q1 ยท What's the difference between Yandex's multiple suffixes?โ€‹

All suffixes share the same servers, login, settings โ€” differences are only display and registration channel:

SuffixPrimary marketRecommendation
@yandex.comInternationalForeign-trade first choice (international default)
@yandex.ruRussiaMost Russian native users
@yandex.kzKazakhstanCommon for Central Asia trade
@yandex.byBelarusLess common
@yandex.uaUkraineClosed to new registrations after 2022 war (legacy users kept)
@ya.ruShort aliasEquivalent to @yandex.ru, shorter

For foreign trade: use @yandex.com (international version) for professionalism.

Q2 ยท Can I recover a forgotten app password?โ€‹

No โ€” revoke and regenerate:

StepAction
1Sign in to id.yandex.com โ†’ Security โ†’ App passwords
2Find the entry โ†’ click Delete
3Click + to regenerate โ†’ use the same label
4In Laifaxin Email Accounts, update the password and save

Q3 ยท Is Yandex still stable? Will it shut down post Russia-Ukraine war?โ€‹

Short-term no shutdown, but context matters:

YearEvent
2022Russia-Ukraine war begins, Western sanctions, Yandex N.V. (Netherlands) stock crashes
2023Yandex N.V. announces sale of Russian business
2024Spin-off completed: Yandex LLC (Russia) takes over mail / Yandex N.V. renamed Nebius Group
NowYandex Mail operated by Yandex LLC (Russia), continuity is normal

Foreign-trade impact:

  • Access from China is smooth, doesn't affect China-Russia trade
  • Don't store sensitive business data (under Russian jurisdiction)
  • Some European/US providers slightly lower reputation scores for @yandex.* mailboxes

Q4 ยท How many emails can Yandex send per day?โ€‹

Yandex doesn't publish a hard limit, but its anti-spam is strict:

PhaseDaily volumeNotes
Week 1 (new bind)Start at 505โ€“10 minute intervals
Weeks 2โ€“4100โ€“200Watch for anomalies
StableMax 300Don't hit the cap

โ†’ Never "mass blast" at any stage!

Truly need bulk sending? Use premium channels.
