Yandex Mail (@yandex.com) ยท Enable Protocols + Generate App Password
Yandex Mail is the free email service from the Russian portal Yandex (Russia's Google-equivalent). Connecting to Laifaxin takes 2 steps:
| Step | What | Required |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Enable IMAP/POP3 in webmail | Yandex disables protocols by default โ without enabling, you can't connect at all | Yes |
| 2 Generate a 16-char app password | At Yandex ID โ Security โ App passwords | Yes |
When binding, paste the app password into the password field (not your Yandex main login password) โ otherwise it fails 100% of the time.
Unlike QQ / 163 where enabling service and generating password are combined, Yandex puts these on two separate pages:
- Protocol toggles: Mail Settings โ Email clients
- App password: Yandex ID โ Security โ App passwords
โ Common mistake: generating the app password without enabling protocols = binding fails.
1. Server Settingsโ
All Yandex suffixes share the same servers:
| Type | Server | SSL Port |
|---|---|---|
| IMAP (incoming) | imap.yandex.com | 993 |
| SMTP (outgoing) | smtp.yandex.com | 465 (SSL) or 587 (STARTTLS) |
| POP3 (backup) | pop.yandex.com | 995 |
Encryption: SSL / TLS
.com, not .ruEven if your email is @yandex.ru / @yandex.kz, the servers always use imap.yandex.com.
Writing imap.yandex.ru fails 100% of the time.
2. Enable IMAP/POP3 Protocols (prerequisite)โ
2.1 Go to All settingsโ
Sign in to mail.yandex.com โ top-right gear icon โ dropdown โ All settings:

2.2 Email clients โ check IMAP/POP3 โ saveโ
After the page loads, left menu โ Email clients โ check From the imap.yandex.com server via IMAP โ recommend also check POP3 โ click Save changes:

Even if you generate an app password, without protocols enabled Laifaxin still can't connect. Email clients must be checked and saved before moving on.
3. Generate the App Passwordโ
3.1 Go to Account managementโ
Back in the inbox โ top-right avatar โ dropdown โ Account management:

3.2 Security โ App passwordsโ
After redirecting to Yandex ID โ top nav Security โ scroll to find App passwords:

3.3 Yandex Mail โ click "+"โ
In the App passwords creation area, find the Yandex Mail row โ click the + next to it:

3.4 Name it โ generate โ copyโ
3 key reminders:
| Reminder | Detail |
|---|---|
| One client, one password | One for Laifaxin, one for Outlook, one for iPhone Mail |
| Use a recognizable label | Recommended: Laifaxin-202605 (with a date for easier cleanup) |
| Copy immediately | The 16-char password is shown only once โ gone after closing |
Enter the label โ click Create:

The system generates a 16-char password โ click Copy immediately:

- Paste into the Laifaxin binding form (safest, used in the next step)
- Or save to 1Password / Bitwarden first
Do NOT screenshot.
4. Bind in Laifaxinโ
Go to Laifaxin Email Accounts and add your Yandex email:
| Field | What to fill |
|---|---|
| Email address | Full email, e.g., yourname@yandex.com or @yandex.ru |
| Password | Paste the 16-char app password (NOT the login password!) |
| IMAP server | imap.yandex.com ยท port 993 ยท SSL |
| SMTP server | smtp.yandex.com ยท port 465 ยท SSL (or 587 STARTTLS) |

After binding, turn on email sync + notifications (see Check New Emails).
Common Pitfallsโ
| Pitfall | Consequence | How to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Generated password without enabling protocols | Binding fails 100% | Do step 2 (enable protocols) FIRST, then step 3 (generate password) |
| Using main login password | Authentication failed | Must use the 16-char app password |
| Dialog closed before copying | Password lost (unrecoverable) | Yandex ID โ App passwords โ delete โ regenerate |
Writing imap.yandex.ru | Wrong domain, binding fails | All suffixes use imap.yandex.com |
| Using ports 25 / 143 / 110 | Unencrypted / blocked | Use SSL: IMAP 993 / SMTP 465 / POP3 995 |
| Slow webmail access from China | Can't reach config | No VPN needed, try off-peak / different browser |
| Mass sending | Strict anti-spam, temp bans | Personal mailboxes are 1-on-1 only; bulk โ premium channels |
FAQโ
Q1 ยท What's the difference between Yandex's multiple suffixes?โ
All suffixes share the same servers, login, settings โ differences are only display and registration channel:
| Suffix | Primary market | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
@yandex.com | International | Foreign-trade first choice (international default) |
@yandex.ru | Russia | Most Russian native users |
@yandex.kz | Kazakhstan | Common for Central Asia trade |
@yandex.by | Belarus | Less common |
@yandex.ua | Ukraine | Closed to new registrations after 2022 war (legacy users kept) |
@ya.ru | Short alias | Equivalent to @yandex.ru, shorter |
For foreign trade: use @yandex.com (international version) for professionalism.
Q2 ยท Can I recover a forgotten app password?โ
No โ revoke and regenerate:
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Sign in to id.yandex.com โ Security โ App passwords |
| 2 | Find the entry โ click Delete |
| 3 | Click + to regenerate โ use the same label |
| 4 | In Laifaxin Email Accounts, update the password and save |
Q3 ยท Is Yandex still stable? Will it shut down post Russia-Ukraine war?โ
Short-term no shutdown, but context matters:
| Year | Event |
|---|---|
| 2022 | Russia-Ukraine war begins, Western sanctions, Yandex N.V. (Netherlands) stock crashes |
| 2023 | Yandex N.V. announces sale of Russian business |
| 2024 | Spin-off completed: Yandex LLC (Russia) takes over mail / Yandex N.V. renamed Nebius Group |
| Now | Yandex Mail operated by Yandex LLC (Russia), continuity is normal |
Foreign-trade impact:
- Access from China is smooth, doesn't affect China-Russia trade
- Don't store sensitive business data (under Russian jurisdiction)
- Some European/US providers slightly lower reputation scores for
@yandex.*mailboxes
Q4 ยท How many emails can Yandex send per day?โ
Yandex doesn't publish a hard limit, but its anti-spam is strict:
| Phase | Daily volume | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 (new bind) | Start at 50 | 5โ10 minute intervals |
| Weeks 2โ4 | 100โ200 | Watch for anomalies |
| Stable | Max 300 | Don't hit the cap |
โ Never "mass blast" at any stage!
Truly need bulk sending? Use premium channels.
Q5 ยท Is Yandex good for foreign trade?โ
| Scenario | Fit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| China-Russia / Central Asia client follow-up | Strongly recommended | Russian customers know Yandex best |
| Replying to Russian customer inquiries | Strongly recommended | Local-brand mailbox replies have higher response rates |
| Replying to European/US customer inquiries | Average | European/US customers have political concerns about Yandex |

- European/US customers โ Gmail / Outlook are more suitable
- Bulk cold outreach โ use premium channels (don't tie to Yandex)

| Use the ID subdomain | Go via id.yandex.com (bypass mail) |
| Enable IPv6 | Some users find this faster |
